OLKOS Publishers, with a creative presence in the Greek book world for 30 years, is primarily engaged in producing original, richly illustrated art and photography books that shed light on aspects of our cultural heritage and explore the perception of modern Greece.
The product of this effort has been, inter alia, a seminal edition of seven volumes under the general title Site and Image, Greece in the engravings of foreign travellers. 15 th-19 th century, which received an Academy of Athens award. It was followed by other books on similar themes, including Maps and Mapmakers of the Aegean, The Greek Portolan Charts, Isolario: The Companionship and Solitude of the islands, and others. OLKOS art books often use hitherto unpublished material from the archives, libraries, private collections and museums with which it frequently collaborates in co-publishing works such as The Autochromes of Mount Athos: The first colour pictures of the century. The book Thessaloniki 1913 and 1918 used material from the Greek archives of the Albert Kahn Museum in Paris; and the book Penelope Delta: Account of a life, documentation from the Historical Archives of the Benaki Museum.
Regarding our photography books, the work entitled Athens Then & Now, a panorama of the city through facing photographs taken a century apart, has been particularly popular. This photographic view in counterpoint has evolved into a series depicting other Greek cities, including Patras Then & Now and the most recent Volos Then & Now. Issues related to our architectural heritage are dealt with in the books entitled Italian Architecture in the Dodecanese, Greek Architects in the Ottoman Empire and Athens Suburbs and Countryside in the 1930s.
In addition to art books, OLKOS publishes texts in translation by distinguished foreign travellers, such as the Journey to Greece by Gustave Flaubert, Nicosia, Buffer Zone by Jacques Lacarri e re, The Greek Experience by John Fowles and others. At the same time, sensitive to the real problems of our times, it produces the Little Bear series which includes representative essays by French thinkers and writers such as: Derrida, Foucault, Deleuze, Sartre, Vernant, Duby, Vidal-Naquet, etc. OLKOS has also published a foreign literature series with selected titles in translation, as well as a theatre series.
In conclusion, these publications - some of which are in bilingual editions - constitute a challenge for the foreign reader who would like a composite picture of the cultural heritage of Greece: a European country but at the same time a crossroads between East and West.
